Services for Children Beginning to Stutter

Most young children beginning to stutter have the potential to recover natural fluency. An evaluation of speech characteristics and the child's speaking environment help determine the optimal course of action to promote fluent speaking ability.

Often, making adaptations to the household speaking environment and educating parents in means of promoting and encouraging speech fluency make a meaningful difference in natural recovery

Potential for Recovery

Research finds that about 80% of children showing signs of stuttering, go on to regain normal, natural fluency. Assessing a child's potential for recovery and formulating an action plan are part of the stuttering evaluation.

Most young children who demonstrate beginning signs of stuttering are enrolled in therapy which relies heavily on parent involvement.  Parents are taught to make modifications to the child's environment, including family communication interactions styles. Family members also learn means to help facilitate fluency in their child's speech. This segment of therapy usually takes six sessions to complete.

From time to time, children beginning to stutter have developmental delays which can influence their speech fluency. Delays in cognitive, linguistic, motor, or speech development can contribute to disfluency.  These co-existing problems can be directly addressed in therapy.
