Bio

Education: Earned Bachelors degree in occupational therapy from the University of Kansas, Masters of Science in occupational therapy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Clinical Background: Inpatient and outpatient psychosocial interventions, community-based employment and re-entry programs.

Personal Profile: Occupational therapist for 30+ years and a teacher for 20+ years. My wife, a sister, a niece and soon one of my daughters are also occupational therapists. My occupational roles include environmentalist, apiarist, artist, activist, gardener. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Honors/Awards: RSHS Deans Awards for Excellence in Scholarship, Teaching and Service, Duquesne Creative Teaching Award, AOTA Service Commendations for service on MHSIS, COE, Ad-hoc Committees and AOTA Fellow.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy: I believe education is a social process and students and I are responsible for the learning dynamic we create in the classroom. I strive to create an interpersonal climate in the classroom that supports cooperation, scholarly discussion, constructive debate and commitment to every person's learning.

Research

Research Focus: Current interests focus on exploring occupational therapy practice in criminal justice systems nationally and internationally. Sustained interests in measuring outcomes of community based programming and examining time use and person environment interaction patterns of marginalized populations.

Current Projects: Co-editor with Catana Brown and Ginny Stoffel on 2nd Edition of Occupational therapy in mental health: A vision for participation. Working with the World Federation of Occupational Therapy to co-construct a position paper defining OT scope of practice with people who have been incarcerated or are in criminal justice systems. Guiding research apprentices in 3 projects; 1) examining challenges, barriers and supports for practitioners in resource scarce African countries, 2) completing a scoping review of occupational therapy practice in criminal justice settings and 3) developing occupation focused programming for adjudicated youth.
