Academic Interests

Her research and teaching interests are nineteenth and twentieth-century Latin American literature and cultural studies, along with Spanish language instruction at all levels. Mildred has organized international conferences and presented papers at various academic meetings, some of which include The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics (2007) and LASA (2009). She has taught undergraduate classes in history, Latin American studies, and Spanish language over the past ten years at both, Peruvian and United States universities. In 2011, she was awarded with the Cole and Marty Blasier Award for her support to the Latin American Studies program and the promotion of Spanish language and cultures. Since 2008, she has been co-organizing the Latin American Film Series and Conferences (http://amigosdelcinelatinoamericano.blogspot.com).

Bio
Born in Colombia, Carmen Alicia Martínez has extensive experience as a Spanish language teacher, counselor and administrator. She held the position of Assistant Coordinator of the Spanish Program at the University of Pittsburgh Hispanic Languages and Literatures Department for three years. She has a BS in Psychology and Pedagogy from the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional from Colombia, post-graduate studies in music therapy and psycho-motor reeducation in Barcelona, Spain, and an MEd in Higher Education Management, with a concentration in Student Affairs, from the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently in the Doctoral Program in Higher Education Management with a Minor in Foreign Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh. Along with her professional career in higher education, she has contributed to the arts and multicultural scene in Pittsburgh providing educational music-related workshops and interactive cultural training sessions in Andean music and culture for diverse student audiences at universities, K-12 schools and community events throughout Western Pennsylvania.
