Bio

Visiting Assistant Professor Valarie K. Blake comes to Duquesne School of Law from the American Medical Association, where she served as an ethics senior research associate (2011-2013) drafting the AMA's Code of Medical Ethics, the primary guidance for physician professional self-regulation. At the Cleveland Clinic, she served as an advanced bioethics fellow (2009-2011) providing bedside ethics consultation, research teaching, and service in the areas of law, ethics, and professionalism. She holds a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, an M.A. in medical ethics from Case Western Reserve University, and a B.S. in neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh.

Professor Blake's scholarly interests focus on the intersections between law and professional responsibility in medicine. While physicians have historically self- regulated through codes, peer review and disciplinary boards, Professor Blake is interested in how increasing state and federal regulation of health care financing and delivery will impact physicians' roles (and responsibilities) to regulate themselves. In the past, she has explored these issues through two different clinical areas: clinical human subjects research (heavily regulated by the federal government) and reproductive technologies, which rely more on professional self-regulation.

Professor Blake presents The Affordable Care Act: Early Outcomes and Legal Implications, a continuing legal education program in February, 2014. View a video in which she discusses her research.
