4th Annual Dr. Barbara A. Sizemore Summer Conference

May 29 & May 30, 2013

The Duquesne University School of Education and the Barbara A. Sizemore Urban Education Initiative are hosting its 4th Annual Dr. Barbara A. Sizemore Summer Conference.

This conference is designed to bring together Duquesne University and the Pittsburgh community around issues related to improving education for all students, particularly the education of students in urban schools.

To register for the conference, please complete the registration form and return it via email to Melissa Price at pricem@duq.edu. Registration is limited to the first 250 people who submit their registration forms. Registration deadline is Friday, May 24, 2013.

  • Professor M.K. Asante spends time with the Sizemore Pipeline – Tomorrow’s Urban Teachers encouraging them to dream big and to realize their potential.
  • Dr. Arnetha Ball, Inaugural Sizemore Distinguished Professor, presents Dr. Susan Munson with the Sizemore Spirit Award.  The Sizemore Spirit award is given to a Duquesne faculty member whose work has significantly impacted children and youth in urban communities.

  • Dr. Terrie Epstein, Professor at Hunter College in New York City, opened the conference on Day 2. She spoke on the effects of racial identities on children’s & adolescent’s interpretations of history.

Dr. Lane & Dr. Epstein were delivered keynote speeches during the 2011 2nd Annual Barbara A. Sizemore Conference.

  • Mr. Brandon Hudson (WPXI Reporter), Master of Ceremonies, speaks with Devin Walker.  Devin spoke about her experiences in Duquesne University new program, Leading Teacher Program in Urban Education.
  • Dr. Ball shares her passion with audience members on the need for importance of making education equal for all students.
  • Conference attendees shared many conversations about possible solutions to the closing the achievement gap.
  • The two day conference ended with honors to Dr. Emma Mosley & Dr. Judith Griggs (pictured in the middle). The women have dedicated over 20 years of service to urban communities.
