First-Year Oral Arguments

Sat., April 5, and Sat., April 12, 2014
Duquesne University School of Law

Alumni, mark the date! Your presence will be requested as a judge of oral arguments delivered by first-year students in support of appellate briefs prepared in the Legal Research & Writing Program.

Each argument, involving two students, will last approximately one hour. Three "judges," typically two practicing attorneys and one Legal Research & Writing Program professor, will preside over each argument.

Volunteers will judge six students, in three pairs of oral arguments. Four different cases will be used for the program, but each volunteer judge will be assigned to arguments on one case. Volunteering will entail three hours of judging, as well as advance reading of the students' briefs and supporting materials.

A reception for alumni, faculty, and students will follow each session.

Help Provide Practical Skills Training

Please consider sitting as a judge of the oral arguments. In the months before the spring 2014 event, you will be able to register online and indicate your availability on the two program dates. The Legal Research & Writing Program will then contact you regarding the precise date and time for your turn on the bench.
