Information Technology Resources for New Students
Though owning a laptop is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended. Both PC and Mac systems are acceptable.
Recommended for new laptop purchases:
- PC/Windows - Name brand (Dell, Samsung, Sony)- Windows 8, 250GB SSD (solid state hard drive), at least 4 GB RAM (memory)
- Apple/Mac - At least a 13inch size screen (MacBook Pro or MacAir) with at least 128 SSD, at least 4 GB RAM. AppleCare 3-year warranty.
- Note: CD/DVD Drives are generally no longer needed. Windows XP, Vista are not supported.
MICROSOFT OFFICE (OFFICE 365 UNIVERSITY)
It is also highly recommended that you have the latest version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Students are eligible to license the software at a significantly discounted price. This can be purchased at the Campus Computer Store, Amazon or the Microsoft Store for $75-80, which entitles you to a 4-year subscription of the latest version of the software for installation on up to 2 computers. The software is downloaded directly from the internet (there are no install CD/DVDs).
To prevent the loss of important papers, projects and research, you will want to have a file/document backup strategy. There are a number of free/inexpensive cloud-based products available that can automatically backup your work:
CAMPUS COMPUTER STORE
As a Duquesne University student, you are eligible for discounted prices on a wide variety of computer equipment and accessories. The Store is located in the Student Union (right next to the Law School building) on the 2nd floor. www.duq.edu/computer-store
The entire Law School is equipped with wireless internet access. Duquesne University's wireless network, DuqNet, requires you to authenticate with your MultiPass username/password. More information can be found here.
Each classroom seat is equipped with an electrical outlet, as well as all study tables and carrels in the Law Library so you will be able to power/charge your laptop and/or other mobile devices.
If you own a laptop, you will be able to complete exams using our ExamSoft software (the same software used for the PA Bar Exam).
Over 50 public computers are available throughout the Law Library.
The Law Library provides access to a number of high-speed LaserJet printers, connected to the public computers. Students can print up to 3,000 pages per academic year at no cost and must authenticate with their MultiPass username/password. Additionally pages can purchased at the CTS Help Desk in the Student Union.
SCANNING & MULTIMEDIA
Document, photo scanners, image editing and OCR software can be found in the Multimedia Center, located in Room 117 of the Law Library.
CALI provides a collection of over 850 interactive, computer-based lessons covering over 45 legal education subject areas. The CALI Authorization Code can be found here (MultiPass username/password Required)
ONLINE CATALOG SYSTEM
SOLCAT is the Law Library's web-based catalog system that allows students to search the library's books by title, author, subject or keywords. It is available at: http://library.law.duq.edu
The Law Library subscribes to many electronic databases which you can access from any computer while in the Law Library, including BNA, CCH, HeinOnLine, and InfoTrac.
LEXIS AND WESTLAW
Lexis and WestLaw are full-text legal information retrieval systems used by many lawyers. You will receive a unique username and password to access these systems once classes begin.
SETTING UP YOUR DUQUESNE ACCOUNT (MULTIPASS)
To securely access a number of Duquesne University systems you must first set up your account username and password, also known as your MultiPass. To establish your account, go to www.duq.edu/multipass and select "Setup MultiPass" and follow the prompts to establish your account. If you need assistance, please contact the Help Desk at 412-396-4357. Note that your MultiPass password must be changed every 6 months.
Your Duquesne email account is your primary means of communication between you and your advisors, instructors and classmates, as well as the official vehicle for the University to communicate with you regarding account and billing information. Your email address will be: email@example.com and instructions for setting up your smartphone, tablet or laptop for using your email account can be found on the Technology section of the School of Law website.
OTHER ONLINE RESOURCES
DORI (Duquesne Online Resources & Information) is Duquesne University's online portal and your connection to a wealth of information, including news, course schedules and grades. You can access DORI at www.duq.edu/dori with your MultiPass username/password.
Blackboard is used by faculty members as an online learning component for supplementing traditional classroom instruction. Your can access Blackboard at www.duq.edu/blackboard with your MultiPass username/password.
SharePoint is a web-based collaboration tool used by the School of Law for online forms, document-sharing and securely storing other information. A link to SharePoint can be found under the Quick Links section at the bottom of the School of Law website.
