Building Your Skills - The Program Modules

The program is delivered in a blended learning format: classroom, online, and teleconference.  Program content includes:

Module One: Context

As you step into the shoes of a professional coach, you will acquire new skills and adopt a new way of being in the world. In Module One, we will honor your transition into this exciting new chapter of your life and begin to explore what it will be like for your clients to be coached. We'll examine the core assumptions of coaching, the purpose of coaching, the primary skills of coaching, the structure of a coaching relationship and a coaching session. You will learn to design the Relationship Agreement with yourself and with your new clients so that it is effective and fulfilling. You'll learn the Duquesne Coaching Model, discover new aspects of yourself and your skills, set personal goals, and create a vision for yourself. You'll begin to practice applying your new-found skills immediately in the classroom, with your colleagues, and with practice clients.

Module Two: Discovery

In Module Two, you will further the self-awareness you began in Module One and explore the myriad ways to build the self-awareness of your clients. To further your self-discovery, you will clarify your values, uncover your strengths, articulate your purpose, design a vision, set goals, and analyze your work-life integration. You will learn how to be present with emotions (your clients' and your own), how to incorporate assessments into your coaching, and help your clients identify what motivates them. You will build on the foundation of specific coaching skills from Module One as you learn to move your clients powerfully toward their most authentic, resonant, and fulfilling lives.

Module Three: Possibilities

In the Possibilities Module, you will coach your clients to expand the possibilities before them, by examining and widening their perspectives, attitudes, and options. By building upon their self-awareness and discovery, your clients will now be primed for making powerful, conscious, aware choices. As you engage with your clients and they learn more about themselves and their deeply-held desires and dreams, roadblocks will also appear. This is the natural way of roadblocks - they appear as soon as we begin making choices toward the best life we can imagine. In Module Three, in addition to enabling choice, you will learn how to recognize the voices behind the roadblocks and how to honor them. And you'll learn many ways to cut through, tear down, and reduce the impact of limiting beliefs that want you to stay right where you are. You'll learn the power of possibility on the one hand, and the management of roadblocks on the other.

Module Four: Action

The Action Module focuses on the essential component of coaching - what occurs in the lives of clients in-between coaching sessions. In this Module, you will move your clients forward by coaching them to set goals, take actions, and assume accountability. You'll learn to move them into beliefs, attitudes and actions that make life rich and resonant. You'll foster learning and inspire action - action that is slow at times and at other times moves the clients along by amazing leaps and bounds. You will explore with the client the deeper meaning of who they are, what they desire and how they want to impact the world around them by their actions. At the same time, in this learning by doing module, you will personally engage with your instructors and colleagues about your own values, strengths and visions for how to move forward in your life and the actions you choose as you offer your gift of coaching in the world, whether by building a business, using your coaching skills in your current position, or simply incorporating coaching skills into your most important relationships.

Module Five: Expansion

In Module 5, we arrive back at the purpose of coaching: an authentic, resonant, and fulfilling life. In this module you will learn to choose among all the skills, strategies, ways of being and beliefs you have learned and uncovered, to create truly transformative growth in your clients. You will practice being flexible, swaying like a reed in the wind as you dance with your clients to facilitate their development and guide them into meaningful actions. While fine tuning the application and integration of your coaching skills, you will explore what is next to foster your own learning and inspire your own personal action. We will examine the current state of the coaching profession, explore multiple coaching resources, and contemplate the potential power of coaching to change the world.

Module Six: Supervision

The Supervision Module is perhaps the most powerful part of the Duquesne Coaching Program. It all comes together in this module, in which you coach real clients, record your coaching, and receive direct and specific feedback from your instructors. These sessions are where your excellence shines through as you tweak your coaching and truly create your own unique style.

Module Seven: Electives

Module Seven provides you with opportunities to learn some specific aspects of coaching, more about a specific niche, or more about building a coaching business. You'll pick and choose which electives will complete your learning in the Duquesne Professional Coach Certification Program.

Module Eight: Capstone

In Capstone, you will celebrate your journey and display your developing skills! You will complete a written exam, an oral exam, and share your personal plan for using your coaching skills out in the world. While there are "tests" in this module, we know you will be ready, and it truly will be a celebration of how far you have come during the six months of the program. Together, we will launch you out into the world, allowing more people to experience the deep benefit of working with a trained, experienced, passionate and professional coach like you!

"The most beneficial aspect was learning from my peers through structured and informal work and discussions. Many were very accomplished leaders with great questions, commitment to learn and constructive feedback to hold me accountable to coaching principles and myself.  Coaching reinforced my preferred approach that is client-centered, growth facilitating and focuses on assets and ability not deficits and drawbacks."
