The English Graduate Organization (EGO) is a professional, social, and organizing body in the English department facilitated by and for graduate students. The organization works to keep English graduate students informed about matters related to graduate life, such as upcoming conferences, conference funding, and student health insurance. EGO has also coordinated a number of activities throughout the years to foster a collaborative, collegial, and intellectually engaging atmosphere within the department:
In the past, EGO has organized a graduate conference, "Other Voices, Other's Words: The Indeterminacy of Allusion", and an interdisciplinary symposium, "[un]disciplined: Examining Contemporary Models for Interdisciplinary Studies". Members of EGO also helped to organize "Lifting Belly High: A Conference on Women's Poetry Since 1900", hosted by the English Department in Fall 2008, "Echoes: Across Disciplines, Texts, and Times" in Spring 2011, and "(anti)Foundations: An Interdisciplinary Conference" in Spring 2013. In Spring 2015, members of EGO will organize a new conference, titled "Access: (Re)defining Mobility and Disability" (March 20-21, 2015).
Further, EGO coordinates the department's Colloquia Series, which provides an opportunity for graduate students and faculty to present their work to the English Department; EGO also assists graduate students who attend local, regional, national, and international conferences by providing financial support, in addition to the funds available through the department and College.
EGO also makes arrangements for our various department parties throughout the semester that are attended by full-time faculty, adjunct instructors, graduate students, and their friends and families. Should you have questions about EGO or graduate studies in English at Duquesne, we welcome you to contact either of the co-presidents.
