Double Major: History and English


Major in History with second major in English

1.)  Student must meet all current History requirements, 30 credits, for the major.

2.)  The student will take the following 24 credit hours in English:

     a.)  ENGL 300: Critical Issues in Literary Studies (Required)

     b.)  Required Literature courses:  9 credit hours—choose from the following:

          • ENGL 217W: Survey of British Literature I

          • ENGL 218W: Survey of British Literature II

          • ENGL 219W: Survey of American Literature I

          • ENGL 220W: Survey of American Literature II

     c.)   If focusing on Literary Studies, fulfill the following:

          • 3 credit hours in British literature at the 400 level

          • 3 credit hours in American literature at the 400 level

          • 3 credit hours in a 400-level course addressing literature & diversity issues

          • 3 credit hours in a Senior Seminar in literature

     Or, if focusing on Writing, fulfill the following:

          • 3 credit hours in Creative Writing

          • 3 credit hours in Critical Writing

          • 3 credit hours additionally in either Creative or Critical Writing

          • 3 credit hours in a Senior Seminar in writing

PLEASE NOTE: There is no special “reduced” credits secondary major in Film Studies.

Major in English with second major in History

1.)   Student must meet all current English requirements, 30 credits, for the major.

2.)   The student will take the following 24 credit hours in History:

     a.)   Required Course: 3 credit hours

          • HIST 311W: Writing History

     b.)   Required Survey courses:  9 credit hours—choose from the following:

          • HIST 203: U.S. to 1877

          • HIST 204: U.S. since 1877

          • HIST 265: England to 1715

          • HIST 266: Modern Britain

(If HIST 265 is not offered within a two-year span, HIST 213 or HIST 325 may be used in lieu of it with departmental permission.)

     c.)   3 credit hours in African, Asian, Latin American, or Middle Eastern History (This course cannot be at the 100 level.)

     d.)   3 credit hours in a 400W-level course

     e.)   6 credit hours in History electives at the 300 or 400 levels.
