Procedures for Internships in Washington, D.C.

Application

There is a two-step application procedure to participate in a Washington internship. The first step consists in applying to the College for permission to study in Washington, D.C. The second step consists in applying for the Washington internship program in which you want to participate.

  1. First, you must apply to the College for permission. The application process involves completing an application, including recommendations from your academic advisor and a faculty member, and submitting it to the College Office (room 212 College Hall) by October 31 (for spring internships) or by April 15 (for fall internships).The College will review your application and notify you in writing as to whether you are eligible to participate in a Washington internship. The minimum requirements for eligibility are that you:
  • apply to an approved Washington internship program
  • have earned at least 60 credits
  • have a 2.5 GPA or higher

Once you have received the College's permission, you may proceed to the second step in the application process.

2. Second, you must apply to the Washington, D.C., internship program in which you wish to participate. This process is handled through your academic advisor:

  • Once the College Office notifies you of your eligibility to serve an internship in Washington, D.C., schedule an appointment with your academic advisor to prepare your application by the published deadline.
  • Once the application is complete, mail the application to the appropriate program.
  • The program to which you are applying will then review your application and notify you or your academic advisor whether you are accepted.
  • Once you receive your acceptance, consult with your advisor on registration and other requirements, as well as how to notify the Housing Office, Financial Aid Office and the Office of the Registrar of your plans.

Evaluation

Before Duquesne awards credit for an internship in Washington, D.C., students must submit a short essay analyzing their experience and an evaluation of the program. The College will make these essays and evaluations available to students who are considering an internship in Washington, D.C., to help them decide on the best program to meet their needs.
