What is Service-learning?
Service-learning is a form of experiential education.
Each service-learning class teams up with a community organization and works together with them. Students do several hours of service. In this service experience students learn from and teach those with whom they work. Students of service-learning classes thus have the opportunity to place what they learn in the classroom in a setting of experience in the world outside the classroom. They then bring back what they learn in this setting back into the classroom.
Service-learning, with this experiential quality, allows students to develop their practical skills in community-based problem-solving, test the skills and facts they learn in the classroom, and work together with diverse groups of people. Students learn about social issues and ways in which to link what they learn in the classroom effectively to these issues.
