Nine members of the Pittsburgh Symphony show off an array of sounds and colors in this season-opener, in music ranging from 17th century dances through dazzling Romantic virtuosity. The witty musings of Antal Doráti, one of the great conductors of the 20th century lead to the masterpiece of Bartók's Sonata, a work of overwhelming genius seldom heard in concert because of its great difficulty.
