This course traces the development of musical thought and aesthetics from the Ancient Greeks to the 20th century, emphasizing connections between theory and compositional practice. With respect to each historical era we ask, "What was considered to constitute great or beautiful music?" and "What ideas, theories, and techniques shaped this conception of the beautiful and toward what purpose did musical expression aim?" Primary source material includes readings drawn from music theorists, historians, and composers as well as important intellectual figures.
