UPNS 400 Critically Ill Adult - 6 credits

This course will focus on the assessment and management of adults with unstable and complex system alterations. This course builds on previously learned knowledge of natural and human sciences, health assessment, conceptual foundations of nursing practice and skills and technologies required to practice professional nursing. The opportunity is provided to apply the nursing process to the care of adult clients experiencing acute illness in a variety of adult health settings. The course will emphasize the assessment of functioning, adaptation, and recovery for patients with high acuity illnesses and clinical problems. Previously learned and advance nursing concepts reflecting the uniqueness of a person's health experience will be integrated to provide holistic nursing care to adult clients experiencing acute illness. Students will have a preceptored nurse experience for the entire semester.

UPNS 411 Nursing Ethics Across the Lifespan - 3 credits

This course introduces undergraduate nursing students to ethical dimension of nursing practice. It presents the processes of moral reasoning and ethical theories, values, virtues, principles and other influences on the student's capacity to recognize, identify and respond to potential and actual ethical issues. The course examines contemporary professional and clinical ethics issues that influence nursing practice, and to a lesser degree, it introduces students to ethical issues at the organizational level in health care. The relationships between ethical and legal principles are also examined. Various models of ethical decision-making are explored as students apply these frameworks to resolve ethical dilemmas. Students will also examine the role of professional codes of ethics and the legal standards that influence the ethical practice of nurses.

UPNS 421 Role Preparation I - 3 credits

This course will focus on synthesizing nursing knowledge in preparation for UPNS 427 Preparation II. Students will emphasize review of nursing knowledge in which HESI scores and individual HESI content areas will indicate a need for further study. This course is designed to prepare students for Role Preparation II and taking the NCLEX-RN examination by providing a comprehensive content review of nursing concepts presented in the nursing curriculum, introduction and explanation of the NCLEX-RN test plan/blue print, and presentation of test-taking strategies specific to the NCLEX-RN examination. Additionally, students will develop a contractual plan for remediation after each HESI.

UPNS 423 Evidence Based Approaches to Professional Nursing Practice (W) - 3 credits

This course will introduce the student to the theoretical and research bases on which practice is built. The course focuses on the use of both qualitative and quantitative research in nursing practice. Students will examine the knowledge that guides nursing interventions, evidenced based practice, outcomes research and critique published research reports. The importance of reviewing the nursing literature in order to make informed practice decisions will be addressed. Ethical issues as they relate to research and practice will be discussed.

UPNS 426 Leadership and Management in Clinical Environments - 6 credits

This course will focus on the professional nurse's role in applying the principles of leadership and management in clinical environments. The role of the nurse leader and his/her influence on safe nursing practice will be explored. Barriers to practice, regulatory, legislative, and political processes in reference to professional practice will also be examined. The course will also emphasize nursing leadership roles and interprofessional collaboration in the development/application of technology to increase efficiency of healthcare services and improve patient outcomes.

UPNS 427 Role Preparation II - 3 credits

This course serves as the continuation of the NCLEX-RN-CAT examination preparation course from the previous semester. Emphasis is on the continued implementation of the revised individualized NCLEX preparation plan based on fall HESI scores and individual HESI content area scores. Students will focus on those concepts of professional nursing identified as areas for improvement and will revise their individual preparation plan after each HESI examination. A review of nursing knowledge from selected content areas will be emphasized. Students will also take a comprehensive examination to determine mastery of nursing knowledge.
