Biography

Devika S Manickam, Ph.D., is a bioengineer and an Associate Professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Duquesne University School of Pharmacy. She completed her Bachelors in Chemical Engineering at University of Madras in India and received her Masters and PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI under the mentorship of Prof. David Oupický.

Dr. Manickam completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center under the mentorship of Prof. Alexander (Sasha) Kabanov. She also worked as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill prior to moving to Duquesne.

Dr. Manickam's scholarship has resulted in over 40 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

  • Drug delivery to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and to cellular targets beyond the BBB

  • Mitochondria delivery using extracellular vesicles (EVs)

  • Engineered extracellular vesicles for co-delivery of innate EV mitochondria and exogenous biologic drugs (proteins/nucleic acids)

  • Re-engineering of lipid nanoparticles using ionic liquids
