Duquesne in Rome 20th Anniversary

Duquesne in Rome 20th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign » GOAL: $120,000

We raised $60,000 during a very successful Day of Giving and Crowdfunding Campaign - half of our year-long goal.  Help us to continue working towards our goal so that we can help Duquesne students have access to the life-changing experience that the Duquesne in Rome program offers.

Duquesne in Rome

February 3, 2021 was the 20th Anniversary of the first “Italian Campus” group to arrive in Rome.  The students in Spring 2001 arrived early in the morning at Rome’s airport for a life-changing semester, as has every group for the past 20 years.  The Duquesne in Rome program has welcomed over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate Duquesne students for a full-semester abroad, or a summer intensive four-week Maymester term, guiding Duquesne students on the path to global citizenship.

Why We Are Fundraising

Sadly, during this monumental semester, we have not been able to host students in the program due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, yet we are actively working towards our 20th Anniversary goal of $120,000 to make sure the program is around another 20 years, giving financial assistance to Duquesne students from all backgrounds to provide a richer, diverse experience for the Duquesne community abroad.

How Your Gift Will Be Used

Gifts of any amount allow us to:

  • Provide our students with Duquesne in Rome Scholarships & Financial Assistance
  • Enrich the programming in Rome
  • Boost the campus library collection
  • Keep our facilities up-to-date

The Impact on Duquesne University Students

"I knew this scholarship would drastically change my experience here and without it, it wouldn’t have been nearly the same." - Morgan Burke

"I couldn’t have come here if I didn’t have that scholarship…money was tight for me, so I knew the only way to get the full effect of studying abroad was if I had financial help. Once I decided I wanted to come I knew the only way I could go was if I received some scholarship or some sort of financial aid to help me." - Salvatore Durante

"I'm half Italian so it's always been my dream to go to Italy and this scholarship made it possible.  I actually worked three jobs last summer just to try and pay for this on my own, but it wasn’t enough…I still had a lot of anxiety until I heard that I got the scholarship…having 'that'/'the scholarship' helped bring a weight off my shoulders." - Marissa Augustine

What is a Duquesne in Rome semester like?

The Duquesne in Rome program is housed in a state-of-the-art facility owned by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth with modern double-room accommodations, laundry and meal service, classrooms, study spaces, lounges, and library as well as 15 acres of safe, walled garden space in a neighborhood just west of the Vatican. The Administration and Resident Life Staff are Duquesne alumni, while the diversity of the Rome-based faculty represent multiple regions of Italy and Europe. The campus is maintained and protected by the Sisters’ community and a private security company.

  • Academic Courses: Specially selected classes to help students stay on track in their academic programs, including Bridges curriculum courses designed for the Italian experience.
  • Experiential Learning: We offer students first-hand experiences through our hallmark on-site classes in Ancient and Art History, where students study in places like the Vatican Museums and the Roman Forum, as well as unique Italian experiences even in more traditional classroom courses.
  • Academic ExcursionsGroup travel in Italy compliments the course work, including a day trip to the medieval hilltop town of Orvieto, the ancient cities of Pompeii and Paestum, and a special excursion for Business students to explore Italian corporations in Parma, Modena and Bologna.
  • Italian Experiences: Extra-curricular experiences such as cooking classes, wine tastings, opera evenings, and soccer matches are just a few of the experiences that the program offers to students who study in the Eternal City.
  • Friendships and RelationshipsDuquesne in Rome’s project with the Vittorio Bachelet High School matches Duquesne students with older Italian high school students to collaborate on projects and mentor each other in language and getting to know Rome. The friendships between Duquesne in Rome students last for years after the semester abroad, including over 20 Duquesne in Rome couples getting married!
  • Independent Travel: Students have most Fridays free during the semester to be able to travel throughout Italy and other European cities during long weekends. Staff organize several trips that encourage student to explore more of Italy as well.
  • Internships: Duquesne students can take advantage of an internship with the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno as guides and researchers at the World War II cemetery where 11,000 Americans are memorialized.
