Social and Living
"I believe that the true spirit of fraternalism is a personal devotion to ones ideals. It is not the attitude toward a few selected ends, but rather the abiding spirit in which all things are done, all difficulties met, all successes received, all obstacles overcome." ~ Edward H. McCun
The Greek community provides a variety of social opportunities. A balance between academics, campus involvement and social activities helps Greeks to become well-rounded and successful young men and women. One such activity enjoyed by all chapters is intramural sports. The IFC Fraternity Intramural league allows Greek members to enjoy friendly competition among chapters, and there's always plenty of interested people who will start up a team with you. The Intramural program runs throughout the academic year and there are many events to choose from.
Other events throughout the year include a variety of social mixers that allow people to relax and meet new people. Mixers are often centered around a theme, such as rock decades or Hawaiian luaus, and allow fraternities and sororities to interact in a social setting. Many chapters have dances for all the members and their dates. Barn dances are popular ones, as well as formals. Chapters also hold retreats, which can include the entire membership, or just an associate membership class who want to strengthen their bonds. Retreats and road trips are a great way to get off campus and go explore the city and the beautiful Western Pennsylvania scenery.
Another great thing about being a member of a Greek organization is that no matter what campus, city, or state you may end up in, you will always have people there to welcome and embrace you. If you're visiting friends, or on vacation, you are always more than welcome to stop by your fellow chapter home that is in the area. Our doors are always open for one another. The Greeks foster a very supportive system, which will follow individuals throughout their lifetime.
Living in an environment with so many people who share your interests means that when you have free time, there's always something to do. Whether it's studying with a friend, going out for dinner, the movies, or to a concert in a park, there's always someone to go along with!
"Fraternities and Sororities symbolize all that we wish to accomplish in our lives. They represent the struggles we all face as we grow. Why we cling on to them no one can explain, but in the end, we are all stronger for it."
Living with your Brothers & Sisters is an experience unique to Greek Life that provides lasting memories of collegiate friendship, fellowship, and great fun! Most of the Chapters at Duquesne have Suites (or separate floors) in Towers Hall on campus. Greek chapter suites are fully-equipped homes that provide a comfortable living environment for much of the Greek Community. There are also some chapters on campus which are unhoused. Members of unhoused chapters participate in all of the same activities as the Greek community and hold meetings at a set location to conduct business which may come before the chapter. The cost of living in a Greek suite is very competitive to other housing options in the Pittsburgh community.
Living in a Greek suite is a great opportunity to meet a lot of people and experience new things. The chapter suites are very spacious and cater to the needs of a college student. There are many features of a Greek home which members can take advantage of. These include:
- Full-time housekeeping staffs
- Study lounges
- 2 members per bedroom
- Computer rooms with internet and E-mail access
- University-approved, live-in Resident Assistants, who serve as a resource to the chapter
- Laundry facilities
- Open kitchens
- On-Campus Security Staff
All chapters suites are on campus within easy walking distance to classes.
