Preventing Sexual Assault

How can I protect myself from assault?

  • Trust your intuition. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave.
  • At parties or clubs, use the buddy system. Don’t go alone and make a commitment with friends to stick together and watch out for each other.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid risky situations. Avoid walking alone at night. Walk in well-lighted areas.
  • Avoid alcohol and other drugs. Be aware of date rape drugs. If you do drink, don’t accept drinks from strangers. Keep your drink with you at all times and be watchful.
  • Be responsible for yourself. Don’t put yourself in situations where you can’t take care of yourself.
  • Communicate clearly and assertively.  Men can interpret passivity as permission.
  • Respect yourself enough not to do anything you don’t want to do. It’s okay to say “NO” to anything you are uncomfortable with.
  • Avoid men who are controlling or dominating. Men who commit rape are into power. They may act “super” masculine and aggressive. They’re often possessive and jealous and treat women as objects, not people. Be aware of and avoid being alone with such men.
