‘The Murals at St. Nicholas Church’ Film to Premiere at Duquesne

Duquesne University will host the world premiere of Maxo Vanka's Masterpiece: The Murals at St. Nicholas Church, a new documentary by director/producer Kenneth Love about the world-renowned Croatian artist's showpiece at the Millvale church.

Narrated by Pittsburgh Bishop David A. Zubik, Maxo Vanka's Masterpiece explores the historical, spiritual and social themes of the murals, from which Vanka drew Croatian folk art traditions. As World War II consumed Europe and his homeland, Vanka incorporated scenes in the mural that captured the history of the tragedy of family members abroad and immigrant families in Pittsburgh.

Vanka completed the murals in 1941. The 55-minute documentary also features some of the people who have worked to preserve the murals as well as parishioners who work as docents and provide tours.

The screening of Maxo Vanka's Masterpiece: The Murals at St. Nicholas Church is presented by Duquesne University's School of Law and the Office of Mission and Identity.

    When: Thursday, Jan. 19, at 4:30 p.m.
