Certificate in Media Arts

An 18-credit (six-course) certificate in Media Arts and Technology is for professionals who want to keep current in the fast-changing sphere of multimedia and web technologies.

The Media Arts and Technology certificate allows students to build a focused program of study. Certificate students may concentrate in Media Management, Digital Media, and Web Design and Development.

Students concentrating in Digital Media must take:

  • DMA 501 - Introduction to Multimedia Technology
  • DMA 522 - Visual Design and Layout
  • Four additional Media graduate courses selected after consultation with the graduate director.

Students concentrating in Media Management must take:

  • DMA 501 - Introduction to Multimedia Technology
  • MDIA 541 - Media Writing
  • MDIA 517 - Critical Studies in Media OR
    MDIA 568 - Media Management and Entrepreneurship
  • One of the following courses:
    • MDIA 565 - Media Law & Intellectual Property OR
      ADPR 567 - Media Research Methods OR
      MDIA 582 - Media Management Ethics
  • Two additional Media graduate courses selected after consultation with the graduate director.

Students concentrating in Web Design and Development must take:

  • DMA 545 - Interface Design
  • DMA 572 - Client-Side Scripting I
  • DMA 574 - Web Design
  • DMA 575 - Database for Web Development
  • Two additional Media graduate courses selected after consultation with the Graduate Director.

Admission Requirements for the Media Arts and Technology Certificate

You must submit to the department:

  • Your online application to the Media Certificate Program (Choose "Post-Baccalaureate" option among the list of programs during the application.)
  • Your application transcripts
  • Examples of electronic portfolios (URL or CD) or hard-copy portfolio.
  • A self-nomination letter address these issues:
    • your reasons for pursuing a certificate in Media Arts and Technology
    • how you would contribute to such a program
    • a description of how your interests, activities and work relate to the program
  • International applicants must also submit their TOEFL or IELTS test scores.

Transferring to the Master's Degree

  • Courses may be transferred to the master's program provided the request is made prior to your last course.
  • At that time, you must submit your GRE scores and provide three letters of reference. You should take your GRE exams during your first year to ensure they arrive in a timely manner.
