Just Released: Service-Learning Faculty Fellow

Service-Learning Faculty Fellow position is being sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Office of Service-Learning (OSL). By creating space wherein a faculty member deepens a particular facet of the service-learning program through his or her own scholarship and by working with faculty peers, we hope to promote faculty development, the scholarship of community-engaged teaching and learning, and to advance institutional change that enhances the integration of teaching and research with community engagement.

Dostilio named Director, Academic Community Engagement

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Provost Pearson has approved a change in title for our program director, Lina Dostilio, effective immediately. Lina is now Director, Academic Community Engagement. Lina's new title more accurately reflects the scope of her work and responsibilities with both internal and external constituencies. Please join me in congratulating her in this recognition of her contributions to our work together as a University community.

Duquesne Colleagues Publish Book Chapters on Service-Learning

Duquesne Occupational therapy faculty have been published in the first book in the field of Occupational Therapy regarding service learning, entitled, Service-Learning in Occupational Therapy Education: Philosophy & Practice, published by Jones & Bartlett, Boston

These chapters include, “Providing Voice to Vulnerable Populations Through Service-Learning Infused in an Occupational Therapy Program” by Ingrid Provident, Anne Marie Witchger Hanson, and Jaime Muñoz, and “Involve Me & I understand Differentiating Service-Learning and Fieldwork” by Patricia Crist.

 

OSL Community Partnerships Coordinator earns three prestigious awards.

Tyra Good, the OSL's Community Partnerships Coordinator, was named to this year's list of 40 Under 40, to the PA Department of Education's Advisory Board for the 21st Century Learns program, and as a Barbara L. OSL Director elected to International Research Association Board of Directors

Lina Dostilio, Director of the Office of Service-Learning, has been elected to the 2009 Board of Directors for the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) in the category of Graduate Student for a three-year term beginning October 2009. Harold named McAnulty College Service-Learning Specialist

McAnulty College creates new Graduate Assistant Position entitled, Service-Learning Specialist. The position will be held by Gregory Harold, of the English Department. Harold will work collaboratively with the OSL and report to Dr. Evan Stoddard. In this role, Harold will support College faculty as they develop and implement service-learning courses.

Office of Service-Learning to join Honors College in 20 Chatham Square

The OSL will be relocating to 20 Chatham Square (across from the Power Center).

In its new home, the OSL will enjoy significantly larger space, including three administrative offices, conference room, and student meeting area.

OSL is hiring for new Graduate Assistant position

A new graduate assistant position has been created in the Office of Service-Learning. Entitled, "Community Partnership Coordinator," this position will be primarily responsible for strategically linking organizations with departments and faculty for academic purposes. Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume or CV to the OSL by August 1, 2008.

SLAC Planning Session

The Service-Learning Advisory Committee will hold its biannual planning session today in 613 Duquesne Union.

The session runs from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes a a luncheon celebration hosted by Academic Affairs.

SLAC members will select strategies to address the findings from our recent program assessment and Middle States Self-Study so that we can further institutionalize the service-learning program.

Duquesne Seeks Carnegie "Elective Classification for Community Engagement"

Duquesne University is working to receive a new institutional classification offered by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the Elective Classification for Community Engagement. To apply, the university is completing a self-assessment of all Duquesne community engagement activities. The university plans to complete the self-assessment this summer and submit a formal application in September 2008.
