Bio

Carolyn Griffin currently is a PhD candidate at Indiana University of PA. Mrs. Griffin’s dissertation research focus is the effectiveness of assigning staff nurses as preceptors for senior level, baccalaureate nursing students. Mrs. Griffin has been at Duquesne University School of Nursing for seven years, with a primary teaching focus in medical-surgical nursing. She oversees and mentors fifteen part-time clinical faculties who are assigned to teach students in acute health care facilities. Mrs. Griffin has worked as a staff nurse at Presbyterian Hospital, Eye and Ear Hospital, and Allegheny Valley Hospitals in medical-surgical units, intensive care, same day surgery, and the recovery room and taught at St. Margaret Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA. She served as the Advance Practice Nurse for the Division of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). She created her role as the Advance Practice Nurse for Inpatient Diabetes Management at UPMC Presbyterian based on the documented need for diabetes support for patients and nurses at UPMC Presbyterian. Mrs. Griffin daily monitored the outcomes of diabetic patients while providing educational programs for both nurses and medical residents.   In the advance practice role for inpatient diabetes management, she created the nurses diabetes resource team. The diabetes resource nurses were selected from each unit to monitor the diabetic care and provide educational resources to the nurses on that unit.  As the Advance Practice Nurse for Inpatient Diabetes Management, Mrs. Griffin collaborated with endocrinologists, dieticians and pharmacists through a multi-million dollar grant awarded from the Department of Defense to develop protocols to improve inpatient diabetes care.
