Bio

 

Mr. Skutski joined the Department as an adjunct in 2001. He created and continues to teach four different filmcourses--Eastern and Central Europe in Film and Print, East and West in Filmand Print, Classics of Modern European Cinema, and Contemporary World Cinema.

Prior to joining the department, he spent over 30 years in the public relations industry. He began his career at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory of Westinghouse Electric, and spent seven years with Burson-Marsteller before founding his own firm, Skutski & Associates, in 1980. He has taught writing,literature and public relations courses at the Univesity of Pittsburgh and the Community College of Allegheny County. His primary academic interest is the cinema of Eastern Europe.

He also coordinates the Department's Language Lab and technology initiative and is a member of the University's annual Human Rights Film Series committee.

Karl is also a published novelist and has written a play that had a recent reading at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. He is active in the community, and has served as chairman of the board of the World Trade Center of Pittsburgh, chairman of the board of Ward Home (which serves at-risk teens), on advisory boards at Ball State and Robert Morris universities, and numerous other non-profit organizations. He also founded the Pittsburgh chapter of Computers for Ukraine, a humanitarian effort that shipped over 1000 computers to schools, orphanages and villages in Ukraine. A charter member of PIttsburgh's Public Relations Hall of Fame, in 2001 he received the Most Distinguished Alumnus Award from the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts.

He is also a past president of IPREX, a network of over 50 independent public relations firms around the world, a past president of PRSA/Pittsburgh, and a former member of the national board of the Counselors Academy of PRSA. He continues to conserve as a management consultant to the public relations and advertising industry, and recently developed a software program that is being utilized in the profession.

Karl has spoken at over fifty business and academic conference in the U.S. and Europe on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from total quality management and crisis communications to postmodernism and Polish cinema. He has also contributed to numerous books and magazines in the public relations profession as well as academic journals.

He lives with his wife Mary in Wexford, PA. Their daughter is an immigration attorney in Boston.
