Budapest on the Bluff: Hungarian Harmonies
Part of the five-concert series Budapest on the Bluff,
Brahms's Piano Quartet #1 is widely loved for its melodic richness and irresistible Gypsy fireworks in the finale, but music lovers will be charmed to hear how Brahms liberally quotes from Schubert's little-known Divertissement, a masterpiece in its own right. In his Hungarian Dances, Brahms arranged popular Gypsy themes, filtered through his own sensibility. Andres Cardenes and Anne Martindale Williams share the fruits of decades of music-making together in Kodály's rhapsodic and folk-infused Duo.
3 p.m., concert, PNC Recital Hall, Mary Pappert School of Music, Duquesne University, 600 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh.
