Biography

Danielle Maggio is an educator, writer, producer, vocalist, and DJ. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at Duquesne University and University of Pittsburgh where she teaches Global Pop Music and World Music. She received her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh in 2020. Her dissertation is titled “‘Sound Projector’: Reissuing, Representing, and Reclaiming the Music of Betty Davis” and used exclusive, in-depth ethnography to produce the first authorized scholarly study of pioneering funk musician Betty Davis. She is the Associate Producer of the 2017 documentary Betty – They Say I’m Different, and the liner notes author for Light In The Attic’s 2023 re-releases of Betty Davis, They Say I’m Different, and Crashin’ From Passion. She has presented her research at the national meetings of the Society for Ethnomusicology, American Musicological Society, Society for American Music, Association for Recorded Sound Collections, Dayton Funk Symposium, MoPOP Pop, and the Cultural Studies Association.
