Biography

Dr. Denise Lucas, Chair of Advanced Practice, comes to Duquesne University with vast nursing and academic experiences. Dr. Lucas began her career with an Associate Degree in Nursing from West Virginia Northern Community College. Her BSN is from Wheeling College and MSN from Wheeling Jesuit University in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program. She then pursued her PhD in Nursing from West Virginia University where she studied women who work, yet remain poor and marginalized.

Dr. Lucas taught at Wheeling Jesuit University from 2003-2008, then took a hiatus to complete her doctoral studies. Upon completion of the studies she was a faculty member at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA where she earned the position of Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program. She is now the Chair of Advanced Practice, overseeing the Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice Programs.

As a family nurse practitioner Dr. Lucas has worked in many primary care settings to include free clinics, federally qualified health centers, and private physician practices. She currently practices and precepts nurse practitioner students at the Ohio Valley Health Center in Steubenville, Ohio. In 2010 she was named the WV Nurse Practitioner of the Year. Her research interests those who are working and poor, antibiotic overuse, and diabetes.
