Fevzi Akinci

Fevzi Akinci, Ph.D., is serving in his second term as the Dean of the John G. Rangos, Sr. School of Health Sciences. Prior to joining Duquesne University in July 2017, Dr. Akinci served as an Associate Dean of the William G. McGowan School of Business and Director and Tenured Professor of the Graduate Health Care Administration Program at King's College in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania from 2012 to 2017. Dr. Akinci held a tenured Associate Professor position in the Health Policy and Administration Department at Washington State University (WSU) and taught graduate courses in health care economics, research and evaluation methods, health care finance, and health management decision science from 2004 to 2009. Dr. Akinci was also Acting-Chairperson, Graduate Program Director and Assistant Professor of Health Care Administration in the Department of Health Care Administration and International Business with six years of undergraduate and graduate level teaching experience at King's College, William G. McGowan School of Business.

Dr. Akinci holds the M.H.A. (1995) in Health Administration, Saint Louis University and the Ph.D. (1999) in Health Services Research with a minor in economics from the School of Public Health and John Cook School of Business at Saint Louis University. Dr. Akinci's scholarly research accomplishments over the past fourteen years include over $1.6 million funded research projects, 42 refereed journal articles, 4 refereed book chapters, 35 refereed proceeding publications, 4 refereed abstracts, and 4 professional/other journal articles. Dr. Akinci's publications appear in such internationally and nationally recognized journals as Health Policy, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Disease Management and Health Outcomes, Health Services Management Research, Quality of Life Research, International Journal of Nursing Studies, the Journal of Health Administration Education, and Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. Dr. Akinci's current research program consists of three types of studies: (1) Burden of Disease and Chronic Care Management Research to assess the disease burden and cost effectiveness and efficiency of various types of interventions aimed at improving chronic illness care, particularly for Type 2 diabetes and related health quality outcomes; (2) Access and Utilization Studies to identify the key determinants for improving access, utilization, and related health outcomes for the poor and underserved; and (3) Comparative International Studies to conduct comparative international studies of health systems and their performance with a focus on health care interventions for chronic disease states. Professional memberships include American College of Healthcare Executives, American Association of University Professors, and Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) Finance and Economics Faculty Forum.

Dr. Akinci currently serves as a member of the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) Board of Directors and he served as a Fellow of the Commission on Accreditation Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) in 1999 and as a member of the CAHME Criteria Review Committee between 1999 and 2001. Dr. Akinci is the first recipient of the Mary Gumble Levy Award to recognize his commitment to teaching and research at Saint Louis University in 1998. Other awards and recognitions include the recipient of the WSU Spokane Faculty Excellence Award for his scholarly contributions to research, teaching, and service at WSU in 2006, numerous student awards for Excellence in Teaching at WSU, the first Mark R. Leffler Scholar of the Year Award at King's College in 2003, Best Paper Award in Nursing Administration Track at the Business and Health Administration Conference in 2003, and Distinguished Research Award at the Allied Academies Fall International Conference in 2001.
