Biography
Gabriel Welsch oversees strategy and operations for the University's functions in media relations, web communications, marketing, advertising, printing, publications and internal communications. He led a comprehensive brand research and development project, the results of which inform comprehensive messaging for Duquesne's strategic priorities.
Welsch is a co-chair of Duquesne's Action Plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; a senior advisor to the Bias Educational Response Team (BERT); a member of The Administrative Policies (TAPS) committee; and a member of the Emergency Management Team.
Prior to joining Duquesne in 2019, Welsch served in executive roles at Juniata College. His last role was as vice president for strategic communication and marketing, and prior to that he served as Juniata's vice president for advancement and marketing and, during the 2013-2014 academic year, interim vice president for enrollment. Prior to Juniata, Welsch worked in advancement communications and public relations for Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts at the University Park campus, during which time he was also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English.
Welsch is past-president of the board of directors of CUPRAP: College and University Public Relations and Associated Professionals. He regularly presents at national and regional conferences on topics related to fundraising, marketing and communications.
A native of Maine, Welsch earned both a bachelor's degree and Master of Fine Arts in English at Penn State, and a certificate from the Institute for Educational Management (IEM) in Harvard's Graduate School of Education. He is the author of a collection of short stories and four books of poems, and his work appears regularly in national literary periodicals. Welsch and his wife, Jill, are the parents of two children.
