Biography

Professor Lane has been with the University since 2005 as an Associate Professor and Director of the Theater Arts program He is also the Executive Director of the Duquesne University Red Masquers and the Resident Director of the Medieval and Renaissance Players.

John has directed more than 120 productions for various companies in the Pittsburgh area including the Pittsburgh Public Theater, Carlow University, Pittsburgh Playwrights Theater Company, Wilkinsburg Area Theater, Pittsburgh New Works Festival, and more. He was the Technical Director for the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh and toured extensively throughout the US and Europe, including a tour of The Marriage of Figaro with Renee Fleming. He directed several productions for the company, including Amahl and the Night Visitors.

He was the Operations Manager of the Pittsburgh Public Theater for 18 years when he worked with August Wilson, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber, Marlo Thomas, F. Murry Abraham, Horton Foote, Mel Shapiro, Rob Marshall, Mark Rylance, Kim Hunter, Haley Mills, and many others.  He has directed several medieval plays that were performed in Toronto at their theater festival.

John Lane was most recently awarded the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts Excellence in Scholarship in 2019, and was also the Center for Student Involvement Advisor of the Year that same year.

John is proud to serve on the Board of Directors for both the Gemini Children's Theater and the Pitsburgh New Works Festival., where he has been able to place our Theater Arts students in paying positions. He is proud to have alumni working in all aspects of theater and at all levels, from community-based theaters all of the way up to Broadway.

Mr. Lane serves as the President of the Board of Director for the Gemini Children's Theater and is also on the Board of Directors for the Pittsburgh New Works Festival where he is the Play Selection Manager. In addition, Mr. Lane currently serves on the University Grievance Committee.
