(video produced by Media student)
New media technologies have been shaping the way communication takes place across individuals, communities, and societies. My research focuses on potential positive effects of new media technologies on the individual, community and the society under four major areas:
Educational Aspects of New Media Technologies
New media technologies such as on-line portals, data mining tools, virtual worlds
and video games are now being recognized as valuable tools for education. My focus
is on the user experiences and perceptions of such educational technologies. I am
particularly interested in conveying effective instructional messages via new media
technologies for academic success and retention.
Serious and Persuasive Games
There is a growing need and demand for alternative media such as games in conveying
serious messages. My research interests include ways in which messages are transmitted
via interactive games in order to create knowledge gain as well as belief, attitude
and behavior change in young people. I focus on the experiences and outcomes of player-game
interaction, specifically player's interactions with the game's goals, storyline,
and feedback mechanism.
Interactive Advertising
The locus of both social and commercial marketing is shifting towards interactive
and participatory media. I am interested in collaborative environments and playful
experiences that enhance brand engagement and information exchange. My focus is on
effectiveness of games specifically designed for marketing (advergames) as well as
multimedia promotional campaigns that utilize gaming elements (gamification).
New Media Usage and Perceptions
New media technologies are changing the nature of social and self-perceptions. I am
interested in how digital and mobile media are affecting everyday practices and perceptions
of individuals. My focus is on how self-efficacy and use of media technologies affect
world views, interests, reality perceptions, and expectations.
