The following is a statement from Duquesne President Ken Gormley on 2007 University graduate Corey O'Connor's victory as the mayor-elect of Pittsburgh.
Duquesne University proudly congratulates Mayor-Elect Corey O’Connor on his historic
victory as the first Duquesne alumnus to be elected mayor of Pittsburgh. His dedication
to public service, deep commitment to Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods and lifelong love
for this city reflect the Catholic Spiritan values that guide both his leadership
and Duquesne’s ongoing mission.
We’re thrilled to see Corey, a 2007 graduate of the Duquesne University School of Education, elected to lead this great city. As a proud Duquesne alum, he reflects the bigger goals and values-driven leadership that define our University. He also has remained steadfastly committed to ensuring that equity and opportunity begin right here at home.
Across more than two centuries and 61 mayors, Pittsburgh has benefited from a wide diversity of leaders shaped by the needs of their eras. The city’s first Catholic mayor, David L. Lawrence (1946-1959), became one of the most influential civic leaders in Pittsburgh’s history and went on to serve as Governor of Pennsylvania.
For more than 147 years, Duquesne University has devoted significant energy and expertise to addressing challenges in health, education, legal access and economic development. Mayor-Elect O’Connor’s career exemplifies the power of these values when carried forward by our alumni and the lasting impact that community-centered leaders can have when they are devoted to improving the places they call home.
We are grateful to Mayor Ed Gainey and his administration for their collaborative leadership. They have been excellent partners and have laid a strong foundation for continued progress.
We know that Corey O’Connor will be an excellent ambassador for Duquesne as he advances Pittsburgh’s future, and we look forward to working closely with him and his administration to uplift our neighbors and strengthen the communities we proudly serve together.
