Marking a milestone in the boldest initiative of its history, Duquesne will open its new College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) building with a special ceremony and open houses on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Prominent local officials, corporate and foundation leaders and community partners will attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the building, located on Forbes Avenue across from the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. They will join Duquesne University President Ken Gormley, who has spearheaded this initiative, the largest in Duquesne’s history, since the project was announced in 2019. The ceremony will also include two entering students: Rose Trimpey-Warhaftig, the first student accepted to the COM, and Jacob Dimenbort, currently a student in the medical school's master's of biological sciences (MBS) program.
Ribbon Cutting and Open House
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will commence at 10:20 a.m. with a procession by University leadership, deans of each of Duquesne’s nine schools, and faculty and student representatives for each school whose work or studies connect to health care. The procession will begin at Old Main, the oldest building on Duquesne’s campus, and arrive at the new medical school to for an invitation-only ribbon cutting ceremony to start around 10:30 a.m.
Duquesne faculty, students and staff interested in cheering on the historic procession along A-Walk are encouraged to do so.
Due to space constraints within the COM facility, the ribbon cutting ceremony itself has limited space for in-person attendance, but livestream access will be available to view it. Additionally, to ensure Duquesne faculty, staff and students are able to get a first look at the facility on that day, two different Open Houses are scheduled:
- All faculty and staff are invited to visit between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Self-guided tours of the facility will be offered as well as limited give-away items, as supplies last. Medical school faculty and staff will be on hand to answer questions and share information about the facility.
- All students are invited to visit between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. for an open house sponsored by the Student Government Association. Self-guided tours of the facility will be offered as well as limited give-away items, as supplies last. Medical school faculty and staff will be on hand to answer questions and share information about the facility.
