The School of Nursing is one of just 17 national programs to receive the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) Endorsement.

The five-year AHNCC Endorsement Program, developed in 2000, facilitates the advancement of holistic nursing or the role of nurse coaching through nursing education.

AHNCC endorses university-based academic undergraduate and graduate nursing programs that have curriculum grounded in holistic nursing philosophy, theory and concepts consistent with the American Holistic Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Holistic Nursing Practice.

“The AHNCC’s mission is similar to our Catholic Spiritan mission, valuing the whole person and incorporating a person’s spirituality into their care,” said Nursing Dean Dr. Mary Ellen Glasgow. “Duquesne nurses are distinguished by understanding the existential meaning of nursing and showing compassion for patients, families and co-workers.”

The AHNCC aims to support and facilitate curriculum development that advances holistic, integrative nursing and the role of nurse coaching, which is consistent with the current and future health care trends. Endorsement of these programs identifies universities that are producing nurses that will participate as transformational leaders in helping change the health care paradigm from one of illness and disease to health promotion, wellness and well-being.
