Voices of Spirit, the University’s chamber and touring choir, has been invited to perform at the prestigious College Music Society Showcase Concert in conjunction with the Society’s 67th national conference in Washington, D.C.

In addition, the choir just released an album, Wake Up My Spirit, featuring a performance recorded at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church from last fall.

The Voices of Spirit program for the showcase—titled Boundless Voices—is a celebration of the endless possibilities for sound and expression within the human voice, according to conductor Dr. Caron Daley, director of choral activities. Slated for Friday, Nov. 8, at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center, Daley explained that it also reflects the conference theme, Advancing Democracy: Empowering Action Through Music.

“Performing at a national conference is such an elevating experience for a collegiate choir. We have the opportunity to take the music to the highest possible artistic standard and to showcase our work to a broad and informed audience,” Daley said. “The voice is such an incredible instrument of artistic expression!”

Voices of Spirit engages 31 students in all years of the four music majors: music education, music therapy, music technology and music performance. Students from Schools of Education and Nursing are also represented in the choir this academic year.

“It’s an honor to be chosen to sing in D.C. because it proves that others recognize our hard work,” said Aaron Gibelius, a fourth-year music education major. “It is also exciting to perform for professional musicians from around the nation.”

Tickets are free, but required for the 6:30 p.m. showcase concert.

The Voices of Spirit album,  "Wake Up My Spirit", was released Oct. 1 on the Mary Pappert School of Music’s own IEMMA Records, and is available to download on iTunes and Amazon Music.
