In celebration of Autism Acceptance Month this April, the Mary Pappert School of Music and City Music Center of Duquesne University are excited to host the second annual Full Spectrum series.
Designed to connect families and individuals in the autism community through a shared love of music, the free musical event series is held in collaboration with Band Together Pittsburgh and Achieving True Self.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be able to host this event again this year,” said Tom Carsecka, assistant dean for music admissions and community programs, who developed the program. “Our first time around was a lot of fun, and we also learned a lot.”
Carsecka drew inspiration for the series from his 7-year-old son Quinton, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2020.
Full Spectrum will feature a variety of activities like an instrument petting zoo, sing-alongs
and musical games. Informative presentations, tours of the music production studio
and musical performances by artists on the spectrum are also scheduled. The series
will culminate in a large-scale, open-mic and concert event on the final day.
Duquesne students majoring in music education, music therapy, music technology and performance all have a unique and vital role to play as facilitators and co-creators of the Full Spectrum experience.
“We are so fortunate to have our current music school students involved and working directly with Full Spectrum participants,” said Carsecka. “They’re eager to help and support the mission and provide brilliant feedback about ways to improve the series’ activities and offerings. They really enjoy the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom and use their talents and gifts to help others.”
The series will be held on the following Saturdays at the School of Music: April 5, April 12 and April 26. Visit the Full Spectrum website to register and for a detailed schedule and photos from last year’s successful series.
“We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating the talents and contributions of the autism community through music,” added Carsecka.
This event series is underwritten by the Pittsburgh Foundation.
