SANE Training Program
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are nurses who have been trained to properly care for victims of assault (both physical and sexual) by providing trauma-informed care and by recognizing, collecting and preserving evidence; interviewing patients; and linking them to vital community resources for follow up.
The purpose and goal of this program is to fully prepare nurses pursuing SANE certification to take the certification exam. There is no graduation from our program, but our goal is to prepare nurses for SANE practice and to achieve SANE certification.

Program Information
Prepare to earn a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification and become a professional qualified to assess and assist in the care of victims of sexual assault.
About the Program
These (10) ten week comprehensive didactic courses, taught by experts in the areas of forensic nursing, law enforcement and criminal prosecution, emphasize victim advocacy and the importance of being a member of the interdisciplinary Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) in the investigative, health care and prosecution processes. Students observe simulated forensic interviews, evidence collection and expert witness testimony. They review videos, participate in discussion boards with expert faculty and staff, take a practice exam that mirrors the Certification exam, and when ready, have access to a review course to prepare for national certification.
Our highly interactive courses, offered since 2002, are designed to instill confidence and are monitored by expert SANEs. We have educated over 1,450 nurses since 2002.
Upon completion of the course, a certificate will be awarded, attesting to successful completion and awarding continuing education contact hours. We then continue to mentor nurses after completion of the course by enrolling them in our Canvas Site, where they will have access to 57 one-hour educational offerings on various SANE-related topics, 17 case review presentation sessions, and a state-of-the-art video presentation of an actual SANE exam with a live patient conducted by one of our expert nurses.
We have striven to make these courses comprehensive and highly supportive. Access to all of the supportive education sessions and full exam will remain for at least two years after completing the course.
Both the Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric/Adolescent didactic courses serve as the "classroom" portion of the national certifications offered through IAFN (International Association of Forensic Nurses). Nurses will learn the theory, research base, and legal rationales for protocols used by SANEs.
All training is consistent with the standards of practice as defined by the IAFN.
