Two-Tiered Model

Duquesne University's model of community-engaged learning prioritizes civic learning and uses two tiers of experience that match our students' developmental trajectory. The two-tiered model allows us to embed civic engagement across the degree programs using a wide variety of learning experiences. The tiers move students from learning about community issues from and with community to taking collaborative action with communities on unstructured, complex problems.

Class Designations/ Propose a Class

There are two levels of community-engaged learning classes: foundational and advanced. Classes that comply with the University's endorsed characteristics of community-engaged classes carry the FCEL (foundational) or ACEL (advanced) designation in the Banner course registration system.
