Duquesne University Board of Directors Chair John R. “Jack” McGinley, Jr., was presented with a 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award by The Legal Intelligencer at its June 14 Pennsylvania Legal Awards ceremony in Philadelphia.
This award honors attorneys from across the Commonwealth who have left a positive
imprint on the legal profession in Pennsylvania during their career. McGinley, a seasoned
trial attorney with more than 45 years of experience, is a Pittsburgh-based member
of Eckert Seamans, a firm he first joined in 2002. His practice concentrations include
corporate, business, real estate and professional liability matters, and he has advised
on numerous high-profile legal matters.
A 1968 graduate of the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University, McGinley
has served as the University’s board chair since July 2017. He also is a member of
Duquesne University’s Century Club of Distinguished Alumni and an emeritus member
of the Duquesne Kline School of Law Advisory Board.
“Jack McGinley is not only a valued citizen of Pittsburgh, he also is a renowned and
respected member of both the Duquesne University family and the broader legal community,”
said Duquesne President Ken Gormley. “As an engaged alumnus of our law school, Jack
has encouraged law students to work in public service through the McGinley Public
Service Fellowships. As a philanthropist, Jack’s generous financial support of Duquesne’s
College of Osteopathic Medicine illustrated his confidence in the school’s future
and the importance of addressing systemic challenges in health care for the underserved.”
The Intelligencer described McGinley in the Awards Ceremony program as a leader in the profession who
has made “an incredible impact on countless organizations in the state.” It added
that McGinley “selflessly serves the community through his legal career, philanthropy
and nonprofit service.”
“I have been fortunate and privileged to be a member of the Bar and to have had the
chance to advance great institutions that have contributed so much to our great region,”
McGinley said.
As an alum of Duquesne University and as a role model, McGinley’s positive influence
goes beyond the legal profession and the people it serves. His steadfast direction
of Duquesne University’s Board of Directors and commitment to his alma mater during
the COVID pandemic—one of the most tumultuous times in higher education—complemented
Gormley’s unwavering leadership of the campus community.
McGinley is as an emeritus trustee at St. Bonaventure, where he earned his B.S. in
1965, and previously served as chair of that board of trustees. He is also chair of
the Rita McGinley Foundation and chair of The Pittsburgh Foundation. Additionally,
McGinley is a former board chair of Pittsburgh Mercy Hospital, former chair of the
Independent Regulatory Review Commission of Pennsylvania and served on the Supreme
Court of Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board.
