Dr. Darlene Fozard Weaver, associate provost for academic affairs at Duquesne, has been selected for the position of provost and executive vice president at the University of Dayton. She will start in her new position effective July 1, 2023.

Weaver was named associate provost for academic affairs at Duquesne in July 2019. In that role, she supervised numerous programs and initiatives, including the Center for Community-Engaged Teaching and Research, the Bridges Common Learning Experience, pre-medical & health professions programs, Undergraduate Education and Student Success, the pre-law program and the University Honors College. She chaired the University Graduate Council and the Campus Community Risk Team and has coordinated University-wide assessment and accreditation activities.

“It’s a bittersweet moment,” Weaver said, “since embracing this opportunity means leaving a University I love and colleagues I deeply admire and enjoy. The University of Dayton is an excellent Catholic institution, and I am excited by President Spina’s vision for the university’s faculty and students. I look forward to continuing work that will make a difference in students’ lives and that aligns with a moral purpose I value.”

Weaver’s academic background is as an ecumenically trained moral theologian, with research specialization in moral anthropology and ethical theory. That background led her to Duquesne, from Villanova University, in 2012, when she arrived as associate professor of theology and director of the University’s Center for Catholic Faith and Culture.

“Darlene Weaver’s intellect, administrative skill and ability to work with faculty colleagues have been enormous assets in recent years,” said Duquesne President Ken Gormley. “She has helped to lead positive change in multiple ways, from curricular development to program oversight to strengthening advising. For these reasons, I know she will be an excellent academic leader at Dayton. We are thrilled for Darlene and proud of her achievements. Even as she takes on this new leadership role, I am proud and grateful that she leaves behind a worthy legacy here at Duquesne and in the broader Pittsburgh community.”

Weaver was selected as part of a highly competitive national search the University of Dayton conducted with the assistance of Isaacson, Miller.

“Darlene Weaver is a superb fit for UD as our chief academic officer, and I look forward to working closely with her in the years to come,” said Dayton University President Eric F. Spina.   “Darlene proved throughout the rigorous search process to be warm, highly relational, and philosophically and temperamentally well-aligned with UD and our Marianist charism.  Certainly, her wide-ranging and successful experiences at Duquesne—including core curriculum redesign, leading a Catholic center for faith and culture, and a broad portfolio as associate provost—prepare her well for this senior position at UD.”
