Program Description

Designed to help students connect their love for music with multiple potential degree and career outcomes, Discover Music is a 1-year non-degree-granting program for undecided or undeclared students. Opportunities exist to explore multiple areas of interest within music before declaring a particular major in Music or earn a music degree and a secondary major in another area of study, all while staying on track to graduation. In order to complete a full degree within 4 years, curriculum requirements will be determined based on requirements of the program path chosen in consultation with faculty advisors and student success coaches.

Requirements

24–36 credits*

Admissions and Retention

No formal audition is required. However, a demonstration of  musical talents and ability in the form of a music demo is required for admission to the program. The demo is a word document containing hyperlinked music media and can include examples of original songs or compositions, performances (solo and ensemble), recordings and productions, and much more.

Learning Outcomes

All Discover Music students that wish to continue on to a major within the School of Music will create a final project in the form of an Audition Portfolio, which will be submitted for consideration of full admission to a major in:

  • B.A. in Music
  • B.A. in Music (Technology Concentration)
  • B.S. in Music Therapy

Students can also elect to pursue a secondary major from within the College of Liberal Arts or change programs entirely and just keep music as a minor area of study.
