Bio

Richard Gaffney directs the Bar Studies Department at Duquesne University School of Law and teaches courses in commercial law and taxation. Before accepting an appointment at Duquesne in 2006, Gaffney practiced law with the Aluminum Company of America and private law firms in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, where he concentrated his practice in commercial transactions, energy law, and employment litigation. He has been licensed as an attorney since 1991 and is admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the United States District Courts for the Western and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania.

Gaffney holds a B.A. in journalism from the Pennsylvania State University, with a minor in nuclear engineering, an MBA in finance, cum laude, from the Duquesne University Graduate School of Business, and a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he served on the University of Pittsburgh Law Review and the Journal of Law and Commerce, and was elected to the Order of the Coif.

Gaffney teaches Basic Federal Income Taxation, Remedies at Law & in Equity, and UCC Article II Sales and Leased Goods. As well, professor Gaffney created and teaches upper-level courses that prepare students to pass the bar examination, Core Competencies for Legal Practice I and II and Applied Competencies I and II. He has also taught Legal Research and Writing and Labor Law.

Gaffney enjoys guitar, piano, and Pittsburgh sports. He lives in Sewickley with his wife and son and is an active member of his church's parish council and other several other non-profit organizations.
