Welcome to the 2020 Human Rights Film Series.
"Justice, justice, shall you pursue that you may thrive and occupy the land that the LORD your God is giving you." Deuteronomy 16.20 (Tanakh: The Holy Scriptures. The New JPS translation According to the Traditional Hebrew Text. The Jewish Publishing Society
This line from one of the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures has resonated throughout history. Most Jewish rabbinic scholars include this statement as one of the 613 commandments that are found in the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures, The Torah. All 613, which include the widely known Ten Commandments, are believed to be of equal importance. The Hebrew Bible has become an essential part of the Christian Bible (The Old Testament) and of the Koran of Islam. The word "Justice" is placed at the beginning of the sentence and repeated twice to stress its importance and authority. This call to action continues to be very much a part of our religious, secular, political and judicial thought. The quotations listed below highlight its presence. The films included in the 2020 Human Rights Film Series are calls to action as well. In showing them, we hope that, in a small way, they help bring a bit more justice to our world.
"Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it."
- William Penn
"Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are."

"There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." - Elie Wiesel

"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope . . . " - Robert F. Kennedy
"Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game."-Bob Dylan
"We've got to understand that all disenfranchised people have something in common...The pursuit of justice really is about equality for everyone." - Anita Hill
"We ask justice, we ask equality, we ask that all the civil and political rights that belong to citizens of the United States, be guaranteed to us and our daughters forever." -Susan B. Anthony, Declaration of Rights for Women, July 1876
