In the wake of the killing of George Floyd by uniformed police officers and the nationwide soul-searching it has spurred, the phrase "implicit bias" has become nearly ubiquitous. But how many of us truly understand what this term means or how perniciously it affects us all, from our own perceptions to our legal procedures and institutions? And for those who do understand it, including the centuries-old cultural roots from which it grows, is there really anything we can do to lessen its impact?
