Biography

Dr. Elizabeth Skrovanek is an assistant professor at Duquesne University School of Nursing.  She completed both her BSN and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, where much of the focus of her doctoral work was around reproductive decision-making in individuals with genetic susceptibility.

The crux of Dr. Skrovanek’s research lies around understanding and addressing the risk perceptions, psychosocial impacts and ethical implications of those with abnormal genetic test results. Her graduate work, "Emotional States Associated with Reproductive Decision-Making in Women who are BRCA Positive" strived to better understand the specific emotions that are predominant in women with a BRCA gene mutation who are making family planning decisions. She has presented at several international, national and local conferences on reproductive decision-making, ethics and personal cancer risk.

Her research and training have been supported in part by a T32 Institutional Research Training Grant through the National Institute of Nursing Research, the Jonas Nursing Scholars program, and intramural awards at both the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University School of Nursing.

In addition to her work as an assistant professor at Duquesne, Elizabeth is a member of professional organizations, such as the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, where she has held leadership positions for the past 3 years and Postpartum Pittsburgh, where she currently serves as the Media and Technology Chair.
