NCAA Progress Toward Degree Requirements for Varsity Student-Athletes
For purposes of participation and representing the institution in any extracurricular activities, a student is considered to be in good standing if he or she is eligible to attend the institution, continue enrollment in coursework on a minimum full-time basis (at least 12 credits) in a given semester, and is not under further specific restrictions as described in the University's Registration and Scholastic Policies.
In order for a student in good standing to represent the institution in intercollegiate athletics competition, he or she must meet the following applicable academic standards:
Fulfillment of Credit-Hour Requirements
1. Twenty-four semester hours of academic credit prior to the start of the student-athlete's
second year of collegiate enrollment (i.e., third semester);
2. Eighteen semester hours of academic credit since the beginning of the previous
fall term or since the beginning of the institution's preceding regular two semesters
(hours earned during the summer may not be used to fulfill this requirement); and
3. Six semester hours of academic credit during the preceding regular academic term
(e.g., fall semester) in which the student-athlete has been enrolled full time.
Fulfillment of Percentage of Degree Requirements
1. A student-athlete who is entering his or her third year of collegiate enrollment
must have completed successfully at least 40 percent of the course requirements in
the student's specific degree program.
2. A student-athlete who is entering his or her fourth year of collegiate enrollment
must have completed successfully at least 60 percent of the course requirements in
the student's specific degree program.
3. A student-athlete who is entering his or her fifth year of collegiate enrollment
must have completed successfully at least 80 percent of the course requirements in
the student's specific degree program.
If the student-athlete's degree is identified in the institution's official catalog as a five-year or greater program, or otherwise requires the completion of a minimum of 150 semester hours:
1. A student-athlete who is entering his or her third year of collegiate enrollment
must have completed successfully 33 percent of the course requirements in the student's
specific degree program.
2. A student-athlete who is entering his or her fourth year of collegiate enrollment
must have completed successfully 50 percent of the course requirements in the student's
specific degree program.
3. A student-athlete who is entering his or her fifth year of collegiate enrollment
must have completed successfully 67 percent of the course requirements in the student's
specific degree program.
Fulfillment of Minimum Grade-Point Average Requirements
1. A student-athlete who is entering his or her second year of collegiate enrollment
(i.e., prior to third and fourth semesters) must present a cumulative minimum grade-point
average (based on a maximum 4.00) that equals at least 1.80.
2. A student-athlete who is entering his or her third year of collegiate enrollment
(i.e., prior to fifth and sixth semesters) must present a cumulative minimum grade-point
average (based on a maximum of 4.00) that equals at least 1.90.
3. A student-athlete who is entering his or her fourth or later year of collegiate
enrollment (e.g., prior to seventh semester and beyond) must present a cumulative
minimum grade-point average (based on a maximum of 4.00) that equals at least 2.00.
