Transfer credit may be granted based on completion of coursework at U.S. institutions that are (or were at the time work was completed) fully accredited by one of the nation's regional accrediting associations. The University may also award credit for coursework completed at tertiary-level international institutions formally recognized by that country's accrediting body, ministry of education, or its equivalent. Some Duquesne schools and departments may also grant credit based on specific articulation agreements to which the university is a party and also for professional education and training based on American Council on Education (ACE) recommendation, subject to the appropriateness for a given program of study.
Transfer credit evaluations, course equivalencies, and applicability of such coursework toward the Duquesne program of study are determined by the graduate program director in accordance with University (e.g., Credit Validation policy) and school-level policies.
All transfer credit is recorded with a grade of "T" ("transfer"), which carries no quality points and therefore is not included in the grade point average. Any course taken at an institution using units or credits other than semester credits will be converted to semester credits upon transfer.
Regulations
- The student must be admitted to degree-seeking status before transfer credit will be awarded.
- Official transcripts from the transfer institution(s) must be on file.
- Any course to be considered for transfer must be completed with a grade of "B" (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better and must be applicable to the student's program of study.
- Transfer credit must be approved by the appropriate program director.
- Any course to be considered for transfer must be a graduate course and must be applicable to the Duquesne graduate degree program. An exception to the graduate course requirement may be possible if the course was in an international program and is both approved by the school and acceptable by the appropriate accrediting body.
- A maximum of 6 credits may be accepted in transfer toward a master's degree of 30 credits.
- For master's degrees of more than 30 credits, no more than 25% of the total semester hours for the degree may be accepted in transfer.
- For a doctoral degree, no more than 33% of the total semester hours, excluding dissertation credits, for the degree may be accepted in transfer. Individual programs may be more restrictive.
- An exception to the doctoral transfer credit limit may be granted if the student has an accredited graduate degree that the relevant school accepts as a building block for the program of study to be completed at Duquesne.
- A course with fewer credits than its Duquesne equivalent may be transferred but will be awarded credit based on the original credit value of the course. The transfer of this course may fulfill a program requirement but result in fewer credits applied toward the degree; it will not lower the minimum credits required to graduate. Any such credit deficiencies must be fulfilled in order for a student to graduate.
- A course with more credits than its Duquesne equivalent will be awarded credit based on the Duquesne credit value for the course. Any remaining credits for that course cannot be transferred as general elective credits.
- Professional graduate programs, at both the master's and doctoral levels, may accept transfer credit in accordance with commonly accepted practice for their academic discipline within higher education as promoted by their professional accrediting body or learned society and as allowed under University accreditation requirements.
- Transfer credit will be revoked if a student subsequently enrolls and earns credit for the same course at Duquesne.
